  • Bayelsa To Set Up LG Teams Against Oil Theft

Bayelsa To Set Up LG Teams Against Oil Theft

To combat the menace of oil theft in communities across the state, chairmen of the eight local government councils in Bayelsa State have been mandated to constitute task force in their areas.

Governor Douye Diri, who stated this on Tuesday during a meeting with local government chairmen in Government House, Yenagoa, said the decision to set up the local government task force on oil theft was borne out of a meeting between governors of the oil producing states and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, last week in Abuja.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Daniel Alabrah, quoted the governor as saying that the teams would collaborate with the Bayelsa State Community Safety Corps to check oil theft.

Senator Diri noted that the incidence of crude oil bunkering and theft have had multiple effects, including low oil production output thereby affecting revenue accruing to states as well as degradation of the ecosystem.

According to him, “arising from the meeting in Abuja, l have also invited you since you are at the local government level of governance in the fight against crude oil theft.

“The issue of oil theft and oil bunkering are of serious concern in our local government areas and since the federal government has involved states and local governments in combating the menace, all hands must be on deck to stamp it out.

“Federal government is working to shore up oil production and if we are able to stop oil theft, production will increase thereby increasing revenues for states and local governments.”

On the August 1 nationwide protest, Senator Diri charged council chairmen to assert their authority by ensuring that the prevailing peace was maintained across communities in the state.

He equally directed that council chairmen should liaise with officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) with a view to provide accommodation to the agency to enable it carry out its duties in their areas.

  • Gov. Diri Congratulates New Super Eagles Head Coach, Finidi

Gov. Diri Congratulates New Super Eagles Head Coach, Finidi

    *Says NFF Went For Merit

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has congratulated Bayelsa-born newly appointed Head Coach of the Nigerian national football team, Finidi George.

Governor Diri also commended the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for appointing the new Super Eagles tactician based on merit.

He stated this on Thursday during the draws for the 2024 Bayelsa Governor’s Cup Tournament, christened “Prosperity Cup,” after the weekly Prosperity Walk at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa.

His Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, in a statement, quoted the governor as having commended the NFF for appointing a son of the soil for the prestigious job.

He said that the governor disclosed that the NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, who visited him on Wednesday, asked why he did not lobby for Finidi to get the job like some of his colleagues did, and that he responded that his disposition was always to allow merit play a major role in such situations.

Governor Diri also said that Finidi did not call him to influence the decision of the Glass House, stressing that the Super Eagles Coach, on his own merit, had cut his teeth as a former Nigerian international, who played for clubsides in Nigeria and abroad.

He equally noted that Finidi had garnered the requisite coaching experience with foreign and local clubsides as well as an assistant coach of the national team under immediate past coach, Jose Peseiro.

He said: “Let me use this opportunity to appreciate the Nigeria Football Federation for appointing one of our own as coach of the Super Eagles, a son of the soil.

“We all know Finidi George as a professional footballer nationally and internationally and he decided to take on a coaching career.

“Yesterday, the NFF President was with me here in Yenagoa and he told me that, Your Excellency, you did not even lobby for your son while other governors were lobbying for their own to be the coach. I said, you know my disposition. I always allow merit to come to play.

“In our discussion, I also made it clear that Finidi never called me to say, Your Excellency, I am going for this, please lobby for me. So I believe he got it on his own merit and he is going to serve Nigeria. But he has to know that he is also from Bayelsa.”

Diri wished Finidi well and assured him that he and the state will support him and the NFF to succeed.

Finidi George is the fourth Super Eagles Head Coach who hails from Bayelsa State. Others before him were the late Paul Hamilton, Monday Sinclair and Samson Siasia. Interestingly, they are all from Sagbama local government area of the state.

Earlier, Director-General of the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament, Mr. Ono Akpe, said the annual competition has received the endorsement of the Federal Ministry of Sports, in recognition of the governor’s outstanding contribution in promoting sports.

Bayelsa Hands Over Stranded Fishermen To Sao Tome And Principe

Bayelsa State Government has formally handed over three fishermen who lost their way on the Gulf of Guinea to the Sao Tome and Principe Head of Mission in Nigeria.

Speaking in Government House, Yenagoa, during the formal handover on Thursday night, Governor Diri lauded the local fishermen in Okpoama community in Brass Local Government of the state, who rescued their fellow fishermen on the Atlantic Ocean.

He said they demonstrated the true spirit of an Ijaw man, who cares for his brothers and humanity in general.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, quoted the governor as saying the action of the Bayelsa fishermen underscored the cordial relationship between Nigeria and the neighbouring country.

Governor Diri disclosed that once they were rescued, his administration through the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Pabara Igwele, made sure that they were provided the necessary health care.

He hailed the effort of the government of Sao Tome and Principe in showing concern for its citizens even though they were fishermen, saying it showed that they truly valued their citizens.

The Bayelsa governor also commended the role of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in the rescue of the fishermen and again called for the agency’s presence in Bayelsa and other coastal states to take care of such situations.

His words: “I got the news of the rescue of these fishermen informally. I then tried to use a formal government system and the security agencies to confirm that we had two citizens of Sao Tome and Principe that were rescued by some Bayelsa fishermen at Okpoama in Brass Local Government Area of the state while the third one was rescued by NIMASA personnel.

“So, I directed that the three of them be brought to Yenagoa so that they can undergo health checks and probably contact the Sao Tome and Principe Government.

“Fortunately, the Sao Tome and Principe Government’s Head of Missions at the embassy in Nigeria made contacts with our government and informed us that he was coming to Yenagoa to receive them.

“I am really very proud of our fishermen who exhibited their Ijawness because the Ijaw man is very hospitable and loves humanity.

“Let me also appreciate the Government of Sao Tome and Principe for going after their citizens who went missing on the Atlantic Ocean for over one week while trying to navigate their way on the sea and the Gulf of Guinea drifted them to the Nigerian boundary.”

Responding, the Sao Tome and Principe Head of Mission to Nigeria, Pires Dos Santos Aguiar, expressed appreciation to the Bayelsa State Government and Nigeria for their effort to rescue his countrymen.

He said the action of Bayelsa and Nigeria has strengthened the relationship between both countries.

President Muhammadu Buhari, with only 38 days left in office, has appealed to Nigerians for forgiveness for any hurt he may have caused during his tenure.

The President also thanked Nigerians for tolerating him in the last eight years while he steered the affairs of the nation.

He spoke on Friday at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during his final Sallah homage by residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) led by the FCT Minister, Mohammed Bello.

Buhari hailed democracy as the best form of government, saying that without it, he could not have become president after already serving as military Head of State.

He said he considered the Salah celebration as a good coincidence to say goodbye and to “thank you for tolerating me for eight years.”

President Buhari added, “I am counting the days. Democracy is a good thing otherwise how can somebody from the other side be a president for two terms? My hometown to Niger Republic is eight kilometres.

“I think this is a very good coincidence for me to say goodbye to you and to thank you for tolerating me for more than seven and half years now.

“I assure you I have deliberately arranged to be as far away from you as possible not because I don’t appreciate the love you’ve shown to me, but because I think I’ve gotten what I have asked and I would rather quietly retire to my hometown.

“Having been a governor, minister and the president twice, I think God has given me an incredible opportunity to serve as your president. And I thank God for that.

“So, please, whoever feels I have done wrong to them, we are all humans. There is no doubt I hurt some people and I wish you will pardon me. And those that think that I have hurt them so much, please, pardon me.”

He reassured the nation that nothing would stop the May 29 handover date to the next administration.

The President had earlier joined other Muslim faithful to perform the Eid el-Fitr prayer on the parade ground of the Mambila Barracks.

Buhari, who arrived on the ground around 9:10 am, was accompanied by some of his family members and personnel aides.

Others at the prayer ground included some members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), security chiefs, heads of paramilitary organizations and government officials.

  • Death of Patrick Peresuodei: Petition Seeks Transfer of Investigation to Police Force Headquarters

Death of Patrick Peresuodei: Petition Seeks Transfer of Investigation to Police Force Headquarters

Fresh developments have emerged in the controversial death of Patrick Peresuodei, as a formal petition has been submitted to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), seeking the transfer of the investigation from the Bayelsa State Police Command to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The petition, dated February 10, 2026, was filed by Arthur & Co Legal Practitioners on behalf of Mr. Bodmas Kemepadei. It calls for what the lawyers describe as an “independent and transparent investigation” into the circumstances surrounding Peresuodei’s death.

According to the petition, Peresuodei was arrested on January 15, 2026, at his residence in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. He was subsequently transferred to the Nigeria Police outfit, Operation Puff Adder, in Yenagoa.

The legal representatives stated that the arrest followed an alleged Facebook post and video in which Peresuodei was accused of threatening their client. They noted that after his arrest, Peresuodei was expected to be charged to court on January 20, 2026.

However, events reportedly took a different turn.

The petition claims that on the evening of January 20, the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) informed the petitioner that Peresuodei was “acting irrationally and speaking in strange tongues” and had been taken to the hospital. He was said to have been granted administrative bail and asked to return on January 26 for possible arraignment.

The situation escalated on January 30, when news of Peresuodei’s death surfaced on social media. The petitioner reportedly contacted the IPO, who confirmed the death.

In the petition to the IGP, the lawyers expressed concern over widespread allegations and counter-allegations circulating online.

“The entire social media landscape is awash with the news of the death of Mr. Patrick Peresuodei, and insinuations of complicity of officers of Operation Puff Adder,” the petition stated.

The legal team further argued that given the nature of the allegations, the Bayelsa State Command should not lead the investigation.

“Prudent and common sense should dictate that in view of the facts and circumstances, the investigation should not be led by the State Command of the Police, whose officers are likely to be held complicit in the incident,” the petition read.

They requested that the case file be transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja or, alternatively, that a high-powered investigative panel be constituted to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death.

“The grant of this request has become imperative to restore confidence in the Force and to ensure that justice is done to the deceased and the family,” the lawyers stated.

The petition also indicated that their client is willing to make himself available at short notice to provide his account of events.

The death of Patrick Peresuodei has generated widespread public attention, with civil society groups and concerned citizens calling for transparency, accountability, and justice. As authorities deliberate on the petition, many await official clarification on the next steps in the investigation.

  • Bayelsa Hosts Angolan Presidential Envoy to Strengthen Namibe Partnership and Boost Bilateral Ties

Bayelsa Hosts Angolan Presidential Envoy to Strengthen Namibe Partnership and Boost Bilateral Ties

On Wednesday, February 11, 2026, I received a high-powered delegation from the Angolan government led by the Executive Minister of State and Head of the Civil House of the Angolan President, His Excellency Dionisio Manuel Da Fonseca, at the Bayelsa State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.

The delegation also had the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Angola in Nigeria, Dr. José Bamoquina Zau.

The meeting was in furtherance of the agreement signed in September 2025 in Luanda between the governments of the Province of Namibe and that of Bayelsa.

His Excellency Fonseca explained that he was in Nigeria as a representative of the Angolan President and that the visit to cement the existing bilateral relationship between Angola and Nigeria as well as that between Namibe and Bayelsa.

He said Angola was determined to work with Bayelsa to implement the agreement, especially in areas of tourism, business, trade, and investment.

According to him, “Since our independence, Nigeria was one of the African countries that gave great support to Angola, and it is because of this that we are here representing the President of Angola, His Excellency João Lourenço.

“Bayelsa State and the Province of Namibe have an agreement in place, and we want to work together to ensure implementation of this agreement and make sure we have business relationships as well as trade and investment both ways.”

In my response, I expressed appreciation to the President of Angola and outgoing Chairman of the African Union, João Lourenço, for the delegation’s visit.

I gave assurance of Bayelsa’s readiness to work with Angola to ensure the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between our State and the Namibe Province.

The trade and investment partnership will focus on areas both sides have comparative advantages, including fisheries, aquaculture and marine economy, agriculture, tourism, and seaport-linked opportunities, with oil and gas also listed as a possible area of cooperation.

The visit was equally significant because Nigeria and Angola had signed many bilateral agreements over the years without implementation, and I noted that this would fast-track implementation of the Bayelsa-Namibe agreement as well as revive Nigeria-Angola bilateral commitments.

I also recalled attending Angola’s 50th anniversary celebration in Abuja and that my earlier visit to Namibe was informed by the similarities between both regions.

Bayelsa and Namibe are both coastal areas and share similar natural endowments.

  • Gunmen Kill Two, Abduct 14 in Bus Ambush Along Utonkon–Okpoga Road in Benue

Gunmen Kill Two, Abduct 14 in Bus Ambush Along Utonkon–Okpoga Road in Benue

Makurdi, Benue State – February 11, 2026 — Armed gunmen ambushed a commercial bus in Benue State on Monday night, February 9, 2026, killing two passengers and abducting at least 14 others in a brazen attack along the Utonkon–Okpoga Road. The incident, which occurred in the Okpokwu axis of the state, has heightened security concerns amid a recent surge in kidnappings and violent crimes in the region.

According to eyewitness accounts and local sources, the bus was conveying 16 passengers from communities in the Igede axis of Oju and Obi Local Government Areas. The travellers reportedly departed Iheijwo Market in Oju LGA around 7:00 p.m., heading toward southern parts of the country, when the vehicle was intercepted by armed assailants along the Utonkon–Ojapo/Okpoga Road linking Ado and Okpokwu Local Government Areas.

Reports indicate that the gunmen forced the bus to a stop and opened fire when the driver allegedly failed to comply immediately. Two passengers were killed at the scene. The attackers subsequently abducted 14 others, leading them into a nearby bush and leaving the area in disarray. While some accounts suggest that two passengers may have escaped during the attack, this has not been officially confirmed. Authorities have consistently stated that 16 passengers were on board at the time of the incident.

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the killing of two passengers and the abduction of 14 others. In a statement, police described the attackers as suspected bandits and said efforts were ongoing to rescue the victims and apprehend those responsible. The command noted that the victims were travelling from Oju LGA when the ambush occurred. No group has claimed responsibility, though similar attacks in the area are often attributed to bandit or kidnapping syndicates operating in Nigeria’s North-Central region.

The Utonkon–Okpoga Road has increasingly become a hotspot for criminal activities, particularly kidnappings for ransom. The route, which traverses rural and semi-rural communities in Okpokwu and adjoining areas, is frequently used by commuters travelling within Benue State and beyond. Security analysts attribute the vulnerability of the road to its relative isolation and limited security patrols.

The latest attack comes days after another high-profile abduction in the same vicinity, where nine Catholic worshippers were reportedly kidnapped during a night vigil at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ojije, Utonkon District. That incident also sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for urgent security intervention.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of Oju Local Government Area, Jackson Ominyi, confirmed the bus attack and expressed concern over the growing insecurity along the corridor. Local residents in Makurdi and surrounding communities have described the incident as part of a troubling pattern of violence disrupting travel and economic activities.

Benue State, located in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, has faced persistent security challenges, including farmer-herder conflicts, banditry, and kidnapping. Criminal groups have frequently targeted highways, markets, and places of worship, demanding ransom payments from victims’ families.

In response to the ambush, security agencies have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators and intensified patrols along major routes. Authorities have urged residents to provide credible information that could aid rescue efforts, while cautioning families against engaging in private ransom negotiations that may further embolden criminal elements.

As investigations continue, the identities of the deceased and abducted passengers have not been publicly disclosed, pending notification of next of kin. Civil society organisations and national media outlets have condemned the attack, calling for stronger and sustained measures to safeguard lives and property across vulnerable communities.

For now, the immediate priority remains the safe rescue of the 14 abducted travellers and the restoration of confidence among commuters using the Utonkon–Okpoga corridor.

Young Female Farmer Raises Alarm Over Alleged Herdsmen Farm Destruction

The ongoing issue of violent attacks and alleged Islamisation threats linked to armed Fulani herdsmen remains a major concern to many Nigerians, particularly as such incidents have been widely reported in parts of Northern and South-Western Nigeria.

It is therefore deeply worrying when similar threats begin to surface in Bayelsa State—widely regarded as one of the most peaceful states in the country, where people of different tribes and religions have coexisted harmoniously for decades.

In recent times, several reports have emerged from various Bayelsa communities of farms being destroyed by cattle allegedly owned by Fulani herdsmen, with little or no decisive response from the appropriate authorities.

In a trending video, Enibo Albert, a young and dedicated female farmer from Bayelsa State, has taken to social media to sound the alarm over the alleged destruction of her farm by suspected Fulani herdsmen. She also criticised a Bayelsa State Government appointee for allegedly attempting to justify or downplay these actions.

Many citizens are questioning why cattle owned by private individuals—kept purely for personal profit—are allowed to roam freely and destroy the means of livelihood of other law-abiding citizens. More troubling are reports that some of these herdsmen are armed with guns and other dangerous weapons, violently attacking farmers who attempt to challenge or resist them.

There is no doubt that Enibo Albert’s outcry reflects the growing fears of many riverine communities across Bayelsa State, where residents lack the capacity to defend themselves against such brutal incursions, similar to what has been reported in other parts of the country.

It is important to recall that the Bayelsa State Government, having foreseen such threats, enacted the Anti-Grazing Law to prevent exactly this kind of situation. Unfortunately, these alleged perpetrators appear to show little or no respect for the laws of the land.

His words: “I have been approached by some top sports officials in our country that, because of the good roads in our state, they want to bring an international marathon to Bayelsa, and I approved it. So, in April this year, we would have such event in our state capital.

“Today, I like to also challenge local government chairmen in Bayelsa to organise marathons in their areas in a small way. I like to see that dovetailing to the finals of the SDD Marathon.“

While congratulating the winners in all the categories, Diri noted that the SDD Marathon was geared towards fostering unity and discovering talents across the country and not only for the state indigenes.
