Born on June 12, 1962, in Ikibiri, Bayelsa State, Chief Okpoi’s journey was marked by resilience, dedication, and a profound commitment to his community and country.

Early Life Influences

Chief Okpoi’s life faced early challenges when he lost his mother before he turned one. Raised by his maternal uncle, the late Mr. Simeon Kalaigberi Epiekiri, he navigated life as the youngest of his mother’s children. His return to his paternal home at seventeen was a pivotal moment, allowing him to embrace his heritage while embarking on a remarkable path of education and service.

A Quest for Knowledge

Education was a cornerstone of Chief Okpoi’s life. He began his formal schooling at St. Athanasius Primary School in Ikibiri, followed by Government Secondary School in Amassoma, where he earned his West African School Certificate in 1980.

His pursuit of higher education led him to Rivers State University of Science and Technology, where he obtained a B.Sc in Accounting in 1987. Continually striving for knowledge, he achieved various qualifications, culminating in a Ph.D. in International Finance and Economics by 2018. His intellectual prowess set the foundation for a career that would significantly impact public service.

An Impactful Career

Chief Okpoi’s career was marked by numerous positions of influence, reflecting his dedication to the economic development of Bayelsa State. Beginning as an auxiliary teacher, he transitioned to accounting, showcasing his exceptional expertise.

His pivotal roles included serving as the Accountant at Super Board Stores, Vice Chairman of Yenagoa Local Government, and ultimately, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. His leadership extended beyond government, as he contributed to the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Council and served as a Special Adviser on Finance to the Niger Delta Development Commission.

A Champion for Sports and Philanthropy

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Chief Okpoi had a passion for sports, particularly wrestling and football.

His tenure as Chairman of the Bayelsa State Wrestling Association saw him foster the talents of athletes who gained national and international recognition.

As a philanthropist, he readily supported educational initiatives and community development projects, embodying the spirit of service that earned him the chieftaincy title “Uwou Kpata-Owei Keni of Agada.”

Faith and Family Legacy

A devout Christian, Chief Okpoi embodied the principles of his faith, contributing actively to the church and its outreach programs. He was a dedicated family man, married with 19 children, leaving behind a legacy of love, leadership, and integrity.
