Advocating for the 2023 Census: Bringing Awareness to the People

 As the Nigerian government prepares for the inauguration of the incoming President, who is expected to prioritize the conduct of the 2023 Population and Housing Census, the Executive Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, has been on advocacy tours to create awareness for the well-planned census in Nigeria.

 During his recent visit to Kwara State, Hon. Nasir Kwarra partnered with the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), Issa Aremu, to encourage Nigerian workers to get involved in the forthcoming census.

 In addition, the NPC Chairman and his team visited the Emir of Ilorin, His Royal Highness, Prof. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR, to create awareness, galvanize support, and mobilize the populace for the census. Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra also had an audience with the Executive Director/CEO of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shuaib, and his team to discuss how to collaborate and integrate e-Civil Registration and Vital Statistics into Primary Health Care services.

To raise awareness and garner support, the Chairman visited the Kwarra State Governor at the Government House, where he was welcome by the Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Kayode Alabi.

In Nassarawa State, the NPC Chairman was presented with a Special Recognition Award by the Institute of Strategic and Development Communication (ISDEVCOM) at the Nasarawa State University in Keffi.

The award is in appreciation of his unique contributions to the generation of reliable data for national planning, good governance, and inclusive development in Nigeria.

 Hon. Kwarra also delivered a keynote speech titled ‘Strategies for the Conduct of the 2023 Population and Housing Census’ at the event, which had notable personalities in attendance, including the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, His Excellency, Emmanuel Akabe; Director-General of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Aliyu Abubakar Aziz; and Statistician-General of the Federation/CEO of Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Prince Adeyemi Semiu Adeniran.

 The NPC Chairman emphasized the need for Nigerians to get involved in the first digital and green census in Africa, which will rewrite the history of census taking in Nigeria.

He was accompanied by the Director Census Department, Mrs. Evelyn Arinola Olanipekun, Census Manager, Dr. Inuwa Bakari Jalingo, Special Assistant to the Chairman, Isiyaku Alhaji Husaini, and other support staff of the Commission.

 In conclusion, the NPC Chairman’s advocacy tour is a step towards creating awareness, galvanizing support, and mobilizing the populace for the forthcoming 2023 Population and Housing Census.

 It is hoped that Nigerians will take an active part in the census, which will generate reliable data for national planning, good governance, and inclusive development in Nigeria.
