He urged the Federal Government to open negotiations with the armed groups in order to de-escalate the insecurity troubling the North-West region.

Speaking in an interview with the BBC, Sheikh Gumi argued that conventional armies generally struggle against guerrilla fighters, and Nigeria is no exception. “Where have you ever seen the military defeat guerrilla fighters? Nowhere,” he said.

He further noted that military action alone cannot resolve the crisis, referencing the military’s own admission that kinetic force accounts for only a fraction of the solution.

Gumi’s remarks come at a time when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed security agencies to work closely with state governors to secure the release of all kidnapped victims.
