Representing the Governor, Senator Douye Diri, at the 2024 Igbo Day celebration in Yenagoa, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, extended the Governor’s warm greetings and commended the Igbo people for their remarkable contributions to the state’s growth.

Prof. Ayawei described the Igbo as a globally recognized people defined by enterprise, innovation, and resilience. He noted that wherever they settle, they adopt the area as home and play active roles in strengthening the economy and fostering community development.

He reflected on the longstanding bond between Bayelsans and the Igbo community, emphasizing that both have lived together peacefully since the creation of the state. “It is crucial that we continue to sustain this momentum of unity and mutual respect,” he stressed.

Highlighting the significance of Igbo Day — celebrated globally to promote Igbo culture and unity — the SSG congratulated the newly elected Eze and encouraged him to mobilize his people for greater collaboration and support initiatives that will further the development of both the community and the state.

Prof. Ayawei also used the occasion to showcase the Diri administration’s efforts to position Bayelsa as an emerging economic hub in the South-South. He cited the recent acquisition and installation of the state-owned gas turbine, which will soon deliver 24-hour electricity to Yenagoa and surrounding areas, as well as ongoing construction of strategic roads linking the hinterlands.

“These projects will boost commerce and make Bayelsa a preferred destination for investors,” he said, assuring the Igbo community of an enabling environment to thrive.

He lauded the industry, adaptability, and resilience of the Igbo people and expressed confidence that their harmonious relationship with other residents of Bayelsa would endure into the future.

“Thank you and congratulations,” he concluded on behalf of Governor Diri.
