Mabel Robinson-Erebi: A Rising Star in the Fashion Industry

Born in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on October 1, 1999, Miss Mabel Tarilayefa Robinson-Erebi started her journey into the fashion industry when she enrolled as an apprentice at Mercy’s Tailoring Shop in 2017, shortly after her Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination.

She learned sewing for a period of one year, equipping herself with the basic skills and proficiency in the craft.

After her time at the tailoring shop, Mabel took a six-month course at the renowned PEFTI Film Institute in Isolo, Lagos in 2018. There, she studied Costume and Make-Up, further enhancing her skills. To gain more practical experience, she underwent a three-month industrial training at Larry Kellz Make-Up Studio in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

In 2019, Mabel registered her business, “May Swish Enterprises,” and began sewing custom-made clothes while also freelancing as a make-up artist. During this time, she prepared for her Joint Admissions And Matriculation examination (JAMB), which she successfully passed in 2020.

She later gained admission into the Theatre Arts Department of Niger Delta University, where she currently pursues her dream of becoming a professional Thespian.

Juggling her studies and work has not been an easy task for Mabel, but she remains faithful and determined. Despite Theatre Arts being a time-consuming course, filled with classes and rehearsals, she maintains her YouTube channel, “May Swish,” which has garnered over 2,500 subscribers.

Mabel shares, “It hasn’t been easy, especially trying to balance school and work, but God has been faithful. Theatre Arts is demanding in itself, but I will be graduating in a few months, and things will only get better from there.”

Upon her graduation in February 2025, Mabel plans to upgrade her skills in fashion design, focusing on garment construction, fashion illustration, and business management. She also aims to expand her May Swish brand.

However, she hopes that her peers in the fashion industry can provide guidance on obtaining financial support through grants, both locally and internationally, to invest in modern equipment and a larger workspace.
