…Pledge Loyalty to Gov. Diri’s Prosperity Team
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! It was a major political earthquake in Oporoma, headquarters of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, as all seventeen elected councilors and political appointees of the council announced their resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking on behalf of the councilors, the Leader of the Southern Ijaw Legislative Assembly, Mr. Edward Oweila, cited the intractable political crisis at the national level and the lingering factional disputes within the Bayelsa State chapter of the PDP as key reasons for their defection.
Mr. Oweila lamented that the PDP, once celebrated as Africa’s largest political party, has become deeply divided, expressing doubts about its ability to reconcile before the 2027 general elections.
He noted that the earlier defection of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, alongside his numerous supporters, as well as Hon. Target Isaiah Segibo and Dr. Josephine Akandi Ekeuwei, Executive Chairman and Vice Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Council respectively, was a wise and timely move taken in the overall interest of the people of Bayelsa State.
The council leader commended Hon. Segibo and Dr. Ekeuwei for providing quality and visionary leadership, as well as for their prudence in managing public resources. He assured that the legislative arm would continue to support the administration’s efforts to promote growth and prosperity in Southern Ijaw.
Speaking on behalf of the political appointees, Mr. Fietebara Tax Yabinanagha described Governor Douye Diri and his team as the best gift to Bayelsa State, and Hon. Segibo’s leadership as a blessing to Southern Ijaw. He pledged the appointees’ unwavering commitment to the Assured Prosperity Administration of Governor Diri and Hon. Segibo.
Earlier, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Target Isaiah Segibo, and the Vice Chairman, Dr. Josephine Akandi Ekeuwei, who received the councilors and appointees at the Council’s Conference Hall, reaffirmed their unflinching loyalty to Governor Douye Diri’s robust leadership. They highlighted the governor’s determination to open up the state through the ongoing senatorial road projects — particularly the recent award of the Yenagoa–Oporoma Road contract to connect Eniwari and Ondewari communities — describing it as “a development worth celebrating.”
Hon. Segibo and Dr. Ekeuwei urged the people of Southern Ijaw to continue supporting Governor Diri’s Assured Prosperity administration to attract more democratic dividends to the area.
