Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!A grassroots political movement, the NEW Associates, has postponed the inauguration of its Bayelsa State chapter and a Mega Rally earlier scheduled for Yenagoa on Saturday, April 12 to April 26, 2025.
Conveners say the group is committed to rallying support for President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Administration and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
But the proposed event had sparked tension in Bayelsa State, the heart of Ijaw land after Mr. Wike was accused of making uncharitable remarks against the Ijaw ethnic nationality.
Briefing Journalists in Yenagoa, Leader of the NEW Associates, Bayelsa State Chapter, Mr. George Turnah said the event had to be moved due to intervention by leaders of the Ijaw Nation and to avoid any possibility of clash and confrontation after some pro Governor Douye Diri and other groups also fixed rallies for the same venue which is the Etegwe junction popularly called ‘Tombia’ Roundabout.
He said he was not aware of any court case against the NEW Associates, stating that the group has the constitutional rights to freedom of Assembly in a democratic nation.
Reacting to a recent ruling by a Bayelsa State High Court which affirmed his suspension as a member of the Bayelsa Chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party by the State Working Committee, Mr. Turnah said he had not been served any notice just as the South-South Zonal Committee of the PDP had set aside the suspension.
Mr. Turnah was elected South South Zonal Secretary at a Convention organized by the suspended South South Zonal Vice President of the Party, Chief Dan Orbih in Calabar recently. The Party had however appointed a Caretaker Committee headed by Mr. Emmanuel Ogidi to oversee the affairs of the PDP in the Zone.
A Federal High Court in Abuja had also recently recognized Mr. Turnah as Secretary of the Party in the South South Zone.
