A Commitment to Health and Well-Being

At the recent 58th Session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) held in New York on April 8th, 2025, Honourable Nasir Isa Kwarra, Chairman of the National Population Commission of Nigeria, delivered an impassioned statement emphasizing Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to promoting health and well-being for all citizens, regardless of age.

The session underlined the critical importance of a healthy population in fostering societal peace, prosperity, and development.

Reaffirming Global and Regional Commitments

In his address, Kwarra proudly highlighted Nigeria’s alignment with global health initiatives, reaffirming the country’s dedication to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals, the Programme of Action from the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) of 1994, and the 2019 Nairobi Commitments.

Additionally, he reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to Africa’s Agenda 2063 and underscored the adoption of the Pact for the Future as crucial frameworks guiding the nation’s health policies.

Addressing Population Growth and Youth Engagement

With an estimated population of 227.6 million, Nigeria is experiencing one of the fastest population growth rates globally. Kwarra noted that over 70 percent of the population is under 30 years old, necessitating policies that cater to a youthful demographic.

This youth bulge represents both a challenge and an opportunity for the nation as it seeks to harness the potential of its young people while promoting their health and well-being across various life stages.

Comprehensive Health Policies

Kwarra outlined Nigeria’s diverse approaches to promoting healthy lives, including the Revised National Policy on Population for Sustainable Development (2022) and the Revised National Health Policy (2016). These policies aim to reduce maternal and childhood mortality rates and ensure that all Nigerians have access to healthcare through the recently enacted National Health Insurance Act (2022).

The commitment to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is pivotal in making healthcare accessible, especially to vulnerable populations.

Addressing Gender-Based Violence

A key focus of Nigeria’s health agenda is the elimination of gender-based violence and harmful practices such as child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM). Kwarra emphasized the importance of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act of 2015, which aims to protect women and girls from such practices.

With 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory having adopted this act, Nigeria is making strides toward creating safer environments for women and girls.

Tackling Health Challenges

The fight against communicable diseases, such as malaria and HIV/AIDS, remains crucial alongside addressing non-communicable diseases that are on the rise.

Kwarra highlighted the establishment of the National Mental Health Act, which integrates mental health services into primary healthcare, reflecting a holistic approach to health that goes beyond physical well-being.

Building Resilience Post-COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities within health systems globally, prompting Nigeria to prioritize resilience and preparedness. Kwarra advocated for increased domestic health financing and investments in local pharmaceutical manufacturing to mitigate future health crises.

Furthermore, he called for enhanced global cooperation to ensure equitable access to healthcare technologies and resources.

A Call for Collaboration

In his conclusion, Kwarra reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to collaborating with international stakeholders to improve health outcomes. By leveraging global partnerships and aligning policies with international frameworks, Nigeria aims to accelerate progress towards achieving health and well-being for all its citizens.

Conclusion

Honourable Nasir Isa Kwarra’s statement at the CPD serves as a powerful reminder of Nigeria’s dedication to ensuring healthy lives and well-being for all ages. As the nation progresses towards its ambitious health goals, it is clear that collective efforts, both domestically and internationally, will be fundamental to achieving these objectives.

Let us work together to build a healthier future for Nigeria and the world.
