During the week under review, Dr. Yusuf’s engagements focused on strengthening collaboration with key government institutions, traditional authorities, students, and NPC staff, as part of preparations for the forthcoming Population and Housing Census and the enhancement of the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system.

On January 12, 2026, the NPC Chairman received the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students Engagement, Hon. Comrade Asefon Sunday Dayo, on a courtesy visit at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. Both parties agreed to collaborate on data-driven initiatives centred on student data generation, census awareness, and capacity building. Dr. Yusuf underscored the urgent need for accurate and comprehensive data on Nigerian students and confirmed that census preparations are ongoing, pending the President’s official proclamation of the census date. Plans were also outlined to engage Nigerian students as census ambassadors and volunteer ad-hoc staff, supporting logistics, mobilisation, public sensitisation, and targeted training programmes to deepen census and CRVS awareness among young people.

Two days later, on January 14, Dr. Yusuf paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, in Abuja. Discussions centred on strengthening synergy between the NPC and the Ministry, particularly in census public awareness, data dissemination, and national reorientation campaigns. The Minister expressed readiness to leverage national media platforms to support sensitisation efforts on the forthcoming census and civil registration programmes.

On January 15, the NPC Chairman led a high-level delegation to the palace of the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, in Ile-Ife, Osun State. The Ooni pledged full support for the Commission’s programmes and commended Dr. Yusuf’s leadership and cultural diplomacy. Dr. Yusuf highlighted the critical role of traditional rulers in promoting census participation, birth and death registration, and national demographic surveys, including the ongoing Nigeria Mini Demographic and Health Survey (NMDHS). He further assured that technical preparations for the Population and Housing Census are complete, with systems being refined to deliver a fully digital process powered by modern technology.

Still on January 15, Dr. Yusuf undertook a working visit to the NPC State Office in Osogbo, where he reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to staff motivation, training, and welfare. He disclosed ongoing engagements with the Federal Ministry of Housing and the Federal Housing Authority to provide affordable housing for NPC staff nationwide. The Chairman urged staff to align with the Commission’s 7-Point Agenda and uphold integrity, discipline, and professionalism, while pledging to resolve technical and logistical challenges affecting the issuance of birth certificates within the digital CRVS system.

The week’s engagements culminated on January 16, when Dr. Yusuf chaired the 87th birthday celebration of Chief AbdulKareem Adebisi Akande, CFR, at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun. In his address, the NPC Chairman stressed the necessity of a credible Population and Housing Census, warning that Nigeria’s reliance on outdated population figures continues to undermine effective development planning. He decorated Chief Akande as a Grand Ambassador for the forthcoming census, highlighting the important role of senior citizens in promoting civic participation and national development.

Conclusion

Throughout the review period, Dr. Aminu Yusuf demonstrated unwavering commitment to the NPC’s 7-Point Agenda by building strategic partnerships with government institutions, traditional authorities, students, and staff. These engagements reflect his leadership vision to reposition the National Population Commission as a modern, credible, and inclusive institution, capable of driving sustainable development through accurate population data and evidence-based planning.
