The Hon. Federal Commissioner representing Bayelsa State in the National Population Commission Mrs. Gloria Izonfuo, mni, says the workshop for members of the State Census Publicity and Mobilization Committee marks another major milestone in the Commission’s journey towards the successful conduct of the 2023 census to generate evidence based demographic data for development planning purposes.

She emphasized that the 1-day capacity building workshop for the members of the Bayelsa State Census Publicity and Mobilization Committee is  in preparation for the 2023 Population and Housing Census.

Mrs. Izonfuo stated that that any organization that strives to achieve success must constantly convey information to all its stakeholders in order to secure their cooperation and support.

“The vision of the Commission for the 2023 census is to produce not only accurate, reliable and acceptable census data but also an inclusive and user-friendly data that will be used by all segments of the society for developmental planning and critical programme interventions”.

“The Commission is determined that the results of the census is acceptable to Nigerians and the quality of the data to be generated meets international best standards This aspiration has informed the methodology and quality of preparations for the census in the last few years. In all these, the need for Advocacy, Publicity and Public Enlightenment cannot be over-emphasised”, she said.

According to the Hon. Federal Commissioner, the job before the Bayelsa State Census Publicity and Mobilization Committee is phenomenal and suggests that “we need to inform, educate and enlighten Bayelsans on the scope of the Census which will involve the counting of every person resident in Bayelsa and that it will take place simultaneously in every household in the country”.

“Given this scenario and the fact that the date for the census is very close, time is not on our side, as such, targeted advocacy and sustained publicity and enlightenment is very imperative to the successful conduct of the Census exercise. This becomes even more crucial in view of the fact that the census is taking place so soon after the conduct of the 2023 General elections which has just been concluded” she said.

Mrs. Gloria Izonfuo explained that after the elections the county’s focus has shifted back to the census, as such, the mobilization of critical stakeholders and Bayelsans in general to support and take ownership of the process to achieve the desired outcome hinges absolutely on our ability to speak to the people in the language that will galvanize and mobilize them to participate in the 2023 census.

She emphasized that the Commission will be relying on the Committee’s expertise and structures to drive the message into every home and household, to drum up support and participation in the 2023 Population and Housing Census in Bayelsa State.

“The convening of this training workshop for the Bayelsa State Census Publicity and Mobilization Committee is critical and it underscores the determination and commitment of the Commission to conduct a successful census in 2023 by updating the members of the committee on the process and methodology of the 2023 Population and Housing Census”.

“This is a clear affirmation to His Excellency’s commitment to the ideals of the census exercise and the premium placed on us, enhancing the capacities of those saddled with the responsibility of driving the process’.

“As you may be aware, the last census exercise was carried out about 16 years ago, which has rendered that demographic data stale and inaccurate, thereby denying the country the benefits of comparative baseline data for evidence based decision making in government.

“Bayelsa State is seemingly even more disturbing as available data lent the state  remains the least populated State in the country, which has placed the State in disadvantaged position in terms of distribution of amenities, projects, intervention schemes, and revenue sharing in the country”.

“We are adequately informed that the forthcoming census exercise is going to eradicate the false impressions of the past and things shall be done properly.  This is going to be the first digital census in the country. There’s going to be the deployment of various technology to enhance the quality and general acceptability of the figures. It therefore calls for strengthened  cooperation and partnership to ensure that trained Stakeholders are provided  experience to enhance our confidence and performance during the exercise. Consequently, this capacity building Workshop is customized to address critical issues that they shall be contending with during the exercise”, he said.
