According to a press statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Mike Makpah, the lawmaker explained that emergency cases often involve unexpected, life-threatening situations such as heart attacks, strokes, severe bleeding, and natural disasters. He noted that effective emergency management requires comprehensive measures, including prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
Hon. Ambaiowei also expressed concern that responses to emergency situations in the country have been marred by frequent rejection of patients, poorly equipped private hospitals, delays in treatment, and lack of awareness of patients’ rights under the National Health Act (NHA), all of which have contributed to avoidable deaths.
He cited the death of Arise TV presenter and news producer, Sommie Madugwu, as an example, noting that delays and rejections by hospitals played a role in the tragic outcome.
The motion, presented before the Green Chamber during plenary on November 13, 2025, has been referred to the Committees on Health Institutions and Health Care Services for further legislative action.
