Otache said he returned to Opaha, his village, seeking healing after the building collapse that claimed his family, but instead encountered fresh horror. In 2023, the community was attacked by armed herdsmen, who left about 95 people dead, including his parents, siblings, and uncles — deepening his grief.
Recounting the traumatic experience, Otache explained that the attackers struck around 3 p.m. His uncle hid him in a kitchen and covered him with a tarpaulin to protect him.
The attackers continued shooting and burning houses for hours. Security personnel arrived around 4 a.m., and he was initially mistaken for dead until they noticed faint signs of life.
“The herdsmen were shooting and burning houses from 3 p.m. until about 11 p.m. It was like a war,” he said.
