The incident occurred in the Giro Masa community in Shanga Local Government Area of the north-western state on Wednesday.
The security operatives, who were said to be on an operation in the area, were reportedly ambushed while heading to secure a construction company premises allegedly being used by the terrorists as a hideout. Two military trucks were set ablaze during the attack.
Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, confirmed the incident, describing it as callous, unfortunate, and barbaric.
Speaking during a visit to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, where the injured victims are receiving treatment, the governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the state.
He also disclosed that the state government would cover the medical bills of the injured and provide support to the families of the deceased personnel.
He said, “Everybody knows that the Kebbi State Government does not take security issues lightly. We are here; we have seen things for ourselves. We have directed the Chief Medical Director of the hospital to ensure that those receiving treatment are properly attended to.
“At the same time, for those who lost their lives, the government will do everything possible to support their families. It is a great loss and a very sad situation, but we must accept what has happened in good faith.
“These are soldiers protecting the lives of Kebbi residents, yet they found themselves in this situation. The government will not relent in its efforts to protect its citizens.
“We sympathise with the families of the 11 soldiers and one police officer who lost their lives while on a rescue mission.”
The governor further described the Lakurawa group as callous and assured continued support for security operations in the state. He also revealed plans to meet with the Chief of Defence Staff in Abuja over the incident.
“We will replace the two operational vehicles destroyed by the bandits,” he added.
Idris commended the military for their efforts and urged them to remain resolute.
“I thank the military for their dedication and commitment. This incident should not discourage you; continue to demonstrate professionalism,” he said.
