With an estimated population of 227.6 million, Nigeria is experiencing one of the fastest population growth rates globally. Kwarra noted that over 70 percent of the population is under 30 years old, necessitating policies that cater to a youthful demographic. This youth bulge represents both a challenge and an opportunity for the nation as it seeks to harness the potential of its young people while promoting their health and well-being across various life stages.
Kwarra has prioritized capacity building within the Commission. He initiated training programmes aimed at equipping staff with the necessary skills to handle modern data collection and analysis techniques. This investment in human capital has not only improved the efficiency of the NPC but has also fostered a culture of continuous learning and development. He approved training and retraining for members and staff of the Commission including drivers to build capacity and close skill gaps. 61,548 personnel were trained on census methodology and process.
The theme of the 2024 World Population Day – “Embracing the Power of Inclusive Data Towards a Resilient and Equitable Future for All” is a reflection of the outcome of both global and regional reviews and evaluations of progress and achievements attained in the last three decades of the implementation of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action (PoA); a decade of the Addis Ababa Declaration on Population and Development (AADPD); and almost two-decades of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), among others.
By joining forces, the Commission and the World Bank seek to bolster the country’s data infrastructure and ensure that decision-makers have access to timely and reliable information. This partnership promises to provide the necessary tools and resources to enable informed policymaking processes that drive sustainable development and alleviate poverty.
