“While this ceremony has traditionally taken place at the national level, from next year, we hope to replicate it in all states. We want First Ladies in the states to partner with our Federal Commissioners and State Directors to register and celebrate the first babies of the year.”

It is gratifying to note that the next census will be biometric-based and will not only generate verifiable data of Nigeria’s population, but will also provide geo-coordinates for where everyone resides or is counted. The evidence-based statistics will guide INEC in accurately delineating constituencies, reapportioning legislative seats, creating polling units, planning elections, and managing electoral logistics.
With an estimated population of 227.6 million, Nigeria is experiencing one of the fastest population growth rates globally. Kwarra noted that over 70 percent of the population is under 30 years old, necessitating policies that cater to a youthful demographic. This youth bulge represents both a challenge and an opportunity for the nation as it seeks to harness the potential of its young people while promoting their health and well-being across various life stages.
“This meeting is crucial in building awareness and mobilizing support for our upcoming strategic planning session,” Kwarra stated. “Together, we can enhance the APLS platform and make it a more effective tool for addressing the pressing population and development challenges facing Nigeria.”
