In today’s political climate, social media has become a vital tool for politicians to connect with constituents. Campaigns are utilizing platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to share their message and reach potential voters.

These platforms are also being used to gauge public opinion and gather feedback. Politicians can interact with supporters and detractors alike, allowing them to better understand the concerns and priorities of their constituents.

However, social media can also be a double-edged sword. A single tweet or post can go viral and potentially damage a candidate’s credibility. There is also the risk of spreading misinformation and fueling divisive and harmful rhetoric.

As the use of social media in politics continues to evolve, it is important for politicians to use these platforms responsibly and ethically. The power of these platforms is undeniable, and with great power comes great responsibility.

The social media frenzy is on as the Bayelsa State governorship elections approach on November 11. Supporters and aides of the candidates are trading places in media campaigns to persuade voters to support their preferred contender.

One of the prominent figures is Dr. John Idumange, a former Director-General of Bayelsa State Government New Media Team and General Manager of the State-owned Broadcasting Cooperation under the Henry Seriake Dickson administration, who is now a staunch member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His bone-crushing media campaign is giving all of us something to worry about and causing distortions to the image he worked hard to protect. As a former boss, I am now trading places with him as we champion different political camps – John Idumange with former Governor and Petroleum Minister Chief Timipre Marlin Sylva and Robinson Erebi with incumbent Governor Sen. Douye Diri.

May I use this medium to propose that as social media crooners, we respect each other’s views which is vital for a healthy democratic society. It is essential to have open and constructive discussions, regardless of the political parties’ affiliations, to move forward as a united community. At the same time, we must not forget our common identity as Ijaw people. Let us play the game without bitterness and focus on our social responsibility to build a better future for ourselves and the generations to come.
