Bayelsa Imposes Immediate Ban on Logging Activities in Forests

The Prosperity Government of Sen. Douye Diri has announced the immediate closure of all forests in Bayelsa State to all logging activities, including timber logging, timber floating, and timber movement.

A statement by the Commissioner for Environment in Bayelsa State, Hon. Ebi Ben Ololo, indicated that this closure aligns with the Ministry’s “mandate to protect and conserve our forests,” as outlined in Section 41 of the Forestry Law, CAP F5, Laws of Bayelsa State 2006.

Accordingly, Ololo ordered the following:

  1. All forests in Bayelsa are hereby closed for all wood logging activities indefinitely, effective January 1, 2025.
  2. No individual or group is allowed to extract or deal with any forest produce (wood) in Bayelsa State without the authorization of the Ministry of Environment.
  3. Any individual or group caught extracting forest produce (wood) without the necessary permission or authorization will be apprehended. Additionally, any vehicle, vessel, or boat used in the transportation of forest produce (wood) will be confiscated, including the floating movement of wood in waterways. Those onboard will be prosecuted.
