Speaking in a recent interview in Abuja, the retired general reflected on the war and its aftermath, over five decades since its end.

Gowon, who led the country through one of its most turbulent periods, said he remains grateful to God for the peace Nigeria has enjoyed since the war’s conclusion. Acknowledging the pain and sacrifices made during the civil war, he emphasized that the intention behind military action was never to destroy, but to ensure the country remained whole.

“I will not say I committed a crime by going into war, it was out of our love for the unity of Nigeria,” Gowon stated during the interview.

He explained that, at the time, the choices made by his administration were informed by the need to protect Nigeria’s future.

According to him, the war, though regrettable in its toll, was pursued with the goal of averting greater disintegration and chaos.

Gowon expressed hope that the country would continue to build on the peace it has maintained since the end of the conflict. He urged Nigerians to prioritize unity, mutual understanding, and national development over division.
