The brutal death of Mr. Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a Deputy Director in the Delta State Ministry of Secondary Education, is not only a tragedy but also a serious test of the Nigerian justice system and its commitment to protecting public servants who carry out their duties.
According to reports and allegations surrounding the incident, Adeda was assaulted on the premises of a state ministry, with allegations pointing to individuals described as aides linked to the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu. These allegations must be thoroughly investigated and established through due process. The incident should not be dismissed as a mere workplace altercation if evidence indicates that a serious criminal offence occurred.
The circumstances surrounding Adeda’s death raise troubling questions about the safety of civil servants, institutional accountability and the ability of government agencies to protect workers who may find themselves caught in disputes involving powerful individuals.
Rather than rushing to conclusions about who is responsible, the priority must be an independent, transparent and credible investigation capable of establishing what happened, who was involved and whether any individual or institution bears criminal or administrative responsibility.
A SYSTEM UNDER PRESSURE
This incident has once again brought attention to longstanding concerns about accountability and impunity within Nigeria’s public institutions.
Across the country, allegations of political interference, abuse of office, intimidation and the misuse of institutional power continue to generate public concern. Where such allegations arise, government institutions must demonstrate that public office is a responsibility—not a shield from accountability.
How does a dispute within a government environment escalate into violence resulting in the death of a civil servant?
How can public servants feel safe carrying out their official responsibilities if they believe that disagreements with politically connected individuals could expose them to intimidation or violence?
These are questions that deserve clear answers.
The Nigerian state has a responsibility to protect the lives and dignity of its citizens, including civil servants. Where a death occurs under suspicious or violent circumstances, the appropriate response should be a prompt investigation, preservation of evidence, accountability and justice for the deceased and the bereaved family.
THE VERDICT OF THE MASSES: JUSTICE MUST NOT BE FOR SALE
As a public-interest advocate standing in solidarity with civil servants who have disrupted activities at the Asaba Secretariat in protest over the incident, I urge the Delta State Government and relevant security and judicial authorities to ensure that the matter receives the highest level of attention.
There must be no cover-up.
There must also be no attempt to predetermine guilt before the investigation is concluded.
The public deserves to know what happened, while the family of Unity Adeda deserves justice through a process that is transparent, impartial and credible.
Any attempt to use financial compensation, political influence, intimidation or bureaucratic delays to prevent the truth from emerging would further undermine public confidence in the justice system.
Compensation, where appropriate, cannot substitute for accountability. What the family and the public need is the truth, justice and assurance that those found responsible under the law will face the appropriate consequences.
THE LINE IN THE SAND
Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu and every individual alleged to have been involved in the incident should be subjected to a thorough investigation. If evidence establishes criminal responsibility, those responsible must face prosecution in accordance with the law.
No political connection, official position or personal influence should place anyone above the law. At the same time, every person accused must be afforded due process and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court.
The Delta State Government should therefore facilitate a completely transparent and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Unity Adeda’s death.
The public is watching, and the bereaved family deserves answers.
This is not merely about one civil servant. It is about whether Nigeria’s institutions can protect those who serve the public and whether accountability can prevail when allegations involve individuals with access to political or institutional power.
The demand is simple: Let the truth emerge. Let justice prevail. Let no one be above the law.
