The announcement was confirmed in a statement issued by the NPC Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Samiat Olabimpe Lawal, who described Dr. Yusuf as a seasoned administrator, educator, and development advocate whose wealth of experience will significantly strengthen the Commission’s mandate.
Born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State, Dr. Yusuf has built an impressive academic and professional profile over the past four decades. His early education began at LEA Primary School, Zungeru, before proceeding to Federal Government College, Odogbolu, in Ogun State. He earned his Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) from the College of Education, Minna, in 1983 and obtained a B.Sc. (Ed) in Biology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1988.
Driven by his passion for public leadership and diplomacy, he later completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration in 2001, a Master’s Degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy (2010), and a PhD in International Relations from Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

Dr. Yusuf has also benefited from several high-level professional development programmes, including High-Impact Presentation Training in Washington D.C. (2010), participation in the Niger State Security Summit (2012), and an Executive Development Programme at Government & Management Services International, London, in 2013.
His public service experience spans local governance, political administration, and national regulatory leadership. He previously served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area, Member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly, and Board Member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) between 2005 and 2007.
A respected grassroots politician, Dr. Yusuf was the Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor of Niger State from 2019 to 2023. In 2022, he played a strategic role as Assistant Director, Grassroots Mobilization (North Central) for the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council.

Until his recent appointment, he served as the National President of the Niger State College of Education Alumni Association, where he championed alumni-driven development projects. He was also the Co-Chairman of the Senator Abubakar Sani Bello Skill Acquisition and Development Committee, leading empowerment initiatives that improved the livelihoods of women and youth across Niger North Senatorial District.
Mrs. Lawal noted that Dr. Yusuf’s extensive background in education, governance, security engagement, and community development makes him exceptionally equipped to provide visionary leadership to the National Population Commission.

His leadership is expected to bolster the NPC’s capacity to generate reliable demographic data—an essential tool for effective national planning, economic development, and evidence-based policymaking.
