The final edition of the Bayelsa State Weekly Prosperity Roadwalk for the year 2025 was held under a cloud of grief on Thursday, December 19, as the state came together to honour the memory of the late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrujakpo.

The exercise, which usually exudes energy and celebration, took on a solemn character following the sudden passing of the Deputy Governor on December 11, 2025, at the age of 60. Participants, dressed in special black obituary T-shirts bearing his image, embarked on the customary roadwalk largely in silence, a sharp departure from the usual fanfare.

The mammoth crowd commenced the walk from the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, proceeding through Diepreye Alamieyeseigha Way, turning at the Imgbi Road junction along the Yenagoa–Mbiama Road, before returning to the base. Drummers and the trumpet team, who normally provide lively rhythms, barely played, underscoring the mood of mourning that enveloped the event.

Addressing the gathering shortly after the roadwalk ended, the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency Senator Douye Diri, expressed gratitude to God and to the large turnout, noting that the day was not just about physical exercise but collective remembrance.

Governor Diri called on the crowd to observe a minute of silence in honour of his departed deputy, praying for the repose of his soul. He described the loss as deeply painful for the government and people of Bayelsa State, recalling the unwavering support he enjoyed from Senator Ewhrujakpo, particularly in the introduction and sustenance of the weekly roadwalk initiative.

The Governor highlighted the late Deputy Governor’s commitment, describing him as a dependable partner who never hesitated to support government policies and programmes. He noted that Senator Ewhrujakpo was actively involved from the inception of the Prosperity Roadwalk, a testament to their cordial working relationship and shared vision for a healthier and more united Bayelsa.

Governor Diri commended residents for turning out in large numbers to honour the late leader, stressing that true legacy lies not in longevity but in impact. According to him, Senator Lawrence Ewhrujakpo made a lasting impact on the state through his service and dedication.

The Governor concluded by praying for the eternal rest of the late Deputy Governor and thanking the people for their solidarity, repeatedly expressing his appreciation with the Izon word “Anua,” meaning “thank you.”

The solemn roadwalk marked a reflective end to the 2025 Prosperity Roadwalk series, reinforcing unity, gratitude, and remembrance as Bayelsa State mourns one of its key leaders.
