The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State Council, has commended the Bayelsa State Government for commencing a headcount of persons living with mental illness in Yenagoa metropolis.

The Union described the exercise as a proactive step towards addressing the growing presence of vulnerable persons living with mental illness on the streets of the state capital, stressing that the initiative demonstrates the government’s responsiveness to issues affecting residents.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, the NUJ said the development was particularly commendable because the issue had earlier been brought to the attention of the state government through the Union’s recent Congress.
“The headcount is a proactive step in the right direction and a demonstration that the government is listening to the voice of the people,” the statement said.
The Council recalled that the plight of persons with mental illness roaming the streets of Yenagoa was raised during its Congress on June 25, 2026, and subsequently captured in the communique issued by the Union.
It commended Governor Douye Diri for directing the Ministry of Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development to promptly respond to the concern.
According to the NUJ, the exercise, if properly implemented, would go beyond merely addressing the presence of mentally ill persons on the streets, as it could provide a basis for identifying vulnerable individuals and connecting them with appropriate care, treatment and rehabilitation.
“The exercise will not only help to sanitize the environment but also provide care, treatment and rehabilitation for vulnerable persons,” the Union stated.
The NUJ Bayelsa Council further pledged its continued partnership with the state government in promoting policies and programmes that advance public health, safety, citizens’ welfare and good governance.
The Union also reiterated the commitment of journalists in the state to their statutory responsibility as the watchdog of society, through objective reportage, constructive engagement and responsible journalism.
