Comrade Erebi who is also a Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties expressed appreciation to the TUC for the award and their continuous support and partnership with the state government in ensuring the welfare and well-being of workers in the state.
The event featured a lecture on the role of civil servants in advancing democracy and the 2023 Governorship elections in Bayelsa State delivered by Ambily Etekpe, PhD, Professor of Political Science (Development Studies, Peace Building and Strategic Studies), Department of Political Science, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island – Amassoma, Bayelsa State.
In his lecture, Prof. Etekpe remarked that Civil Servants have played prominent roles in the Advancement of Democratic processes in Nigeria, especially in the 4th Republic. According to him, these roles have not deepened the outcomes of Bayelsa State’s elections.
“Civil Servants, through the Trade Union Congress (TUC), should lead the campaign against all forms of electoral malpractices and sanction members.”
“Lobby the 10th National Assembly to reduce the size of governance at the three tiers of government and accepting single tenure of five years for every elective position in the three tiers of government”, he said.
The lecture which focused on Civil Servants’ participation in the 2023 Governorship elections in Bayelsa State, also raised questions on how Civil Servants should perform on an election day contrary to the position of its employers especially, President or Governor in power that seeks re-election, how Civil Servants could be fair and not corrupt on election day when he or she is poorly paid, not insured or owed salaries/entitlement for a long period; and how Civil Servants could be credible when he/she has limited access to quality information, inspite of the freedom of information (FOIA) 2011.
Earlier in his welcome address, Comrade Julius Laye, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Bayelsa State said that since the present Executives came on board, the union have set an agenda and tasked itself to actualize the dreams and aspirations of members in particular, and the Labour family in general.
According to him, this vision has gone a long way in changing the dynamics of the relationship between the government and the TUC.
“We have placed the struggle on a pedestal that has guaranteed quick resolution of thorny issues bedevilling workers in the State”.
“In partnership with our sister labour centre, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), we have fashioned out deliberate policies and strategies to engage government in the struggle for the improved welfare of our teeming members in the State”, he said.
Speaking of some of his achievements so far, Comrade Julius Laye said that as a result of the Union’s struggle, Bayelsa became one of the leading States in the Federation to earn the thirty thousand minimum wage full using the template released by the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission.
“Remarkably, we secured the recent approval by His Excellency, the Miracle Governor for the payment of the 2015 to 2017 promotions arrears that has commenced in the State”.
“Bayelsa is one of the few States that have consistently conducted promotion interviews and subsequent implementation of the promotions for successful civil servants”.
“Come November 11, 2023, Bayelsans will be heading to the polls to elect a new leader. As your elected leaders, one of our primary duties is to awaken the consciousness of our members to exercise their franchise during elections which is a civic responsibility”, he said.
