China, traditionally an ally of Russia on the international stage, made a call to the United Nations for peace negotiations in Ukraine.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Al Jazeera reported that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi requested the governments of Moscow and Kyiv “keep the crisis from spilling over” to developing nations.
“China supports all efforts conducive to the peaceful resolution of the Ukraine crisis. The pressing priority is to facilitate talks for peace,” Wang said to the United Nations General Assembly.
“The fundamental solution is to address the legitimate security concerns of all parties and build a balanced, effective, and sustainable security architecture”, the Chinese Foreign Minister added.
Wang also met with Dmytro Kuleba, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, in what The Guardian describes as their first talks since the war began.
Russian war crimes
Following a UN investigation in which over 150 victims and witnesses were interviewed, evidence was found that Russia had committed war crimes in Ukraine.
Since then, and with the partial mobilization of the Russian army, China has faced more pressure from the West to leverage its relationship with Russia and pressure President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.
Russia speaks out
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, following a week of protests in the UN against the actions of his country in Ukraine, complained about the anti-Russian sentiment coming from most Western countries.
