Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, on Monday inaugurated a constituency bridge project constructed by the member representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Oforji Oboku, in Opolo Community, Yenagoa Local Government Area.

The governor also approved the construction of an access road linking the community to Gloryland Drive in Yenagoa.
Governor Diri commended the federal lawmaker for embarking on the landmark project, describing it as a rare and commendable intervention by a legislator.
He noted that it was uncommon for lawmakers to execute such capital-intensive projects.
“It would have taken your full tenure and even more to complete a project like this. So, I appreciate Honourable Oboku for remembering his people because they say charity begins at home,” he said.
Responding to an appeal for the state government’s intervention in a lingering boundary dispute involving Opolo and its neighbouring communities of Okutukutu and Edepie, Governor Diri urged all parties to embrace peace in the interest of development.
“It is good for communities to be at peace. It is also the responsibility of community leaders to sustain peace, and I believe Opolo has capable leadership. I implore you to maintain the peace,” the governor said.
In his welcome address, the Paramount Ruler of Opolo Community, HRH Inia Nengibo, Ogbogbo XII, said the bridge project aligned with the Prosperity Administration’s urban renewal agenda.
He appealed to the governor to approve the construction of a 2.5-kilometre road linking the bridge to the New Yenagoa City to boost socio-economic activities in the community and surrounding areas.
“The road will enhance commerce, improve security and facilitate the movement of people. We are grateful for your magnanimity in recognising our community,” the monarch said.
Speaking at the event, the project initiator, Hon. Oboku, said the bridge was conceived to connect riverine communities, improve accessibility, enhance security and stimulate socio-economic development in Opolo.
“This project will positively impact lives and stimulate economic activities within our community. My primary responsibility is to make laws and formulate policies for the benefit of the people of Nigeria, especially my constituents.
“As a young boy, I remember my people praying for government to build a bridge across this creek. Now that I have the privilege to serve, I took the decision to construct this bridge. I am delighted today and grateful to the governor for his support,” he said.
In a goodwill message, the Senator representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Dr. Konbowei Benson, said the bridge project complements Governor Diri’s infrastructure development and urban renewal initiatives.
He urged the people of Opolo to continue supporting and partnering with the state government to enjoy more dividends of democracy.
