Ikibiri Community Appeals for Urgent Attention to Infrastructure Development

Amidst the revelries of the 5th anniversary celebrations of the Prosperity Government of Bayelsa State and its ongoing focus on rural infrastructural development, stakeholders in Ikibiri Community have called on Sen. Douye Diri to pay attention to the long-abandoned Ikibiri-Airport-Amassoma Road project and other essential social amenities that the people desperately need.

In a message shared on social media, an indigene of Ikibiri and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties Hon. Incoming Ikatuboh stated, “Ikibiri community lacks basic amenities, including a hospital, roads, electricity, and a reliable water supply. The educational sector is underdeveloped, with very few teachers in primary and secondary schools. The absence of a National Youth Corps members’ lodge further exacerbates the situation. It’s disheartening to see our community in such a state, especially considering the efforts of Governor Diri’s team to encourage our people to support his re-election.”

“We urge Governor Diri to visit our community, see things for himself, and take concrete steps to address our needs. We’re not asking for the moon; we’re asking for the basics that every citizen deserves. We hope that Governor Diri will take our plea seriously and work towards making Ikibiri a better place for all its citizens.”

Additionally, reacting to the current social and economic challenges facing the Ikibiri people of Yenagoa Local Government Area, Hon. Robinson Ere Erebi stated that the community, a stronghold of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), deserves its fair share of the prosperity network of rural development.

Hon. Erebi, who is also a Technical Assistant to the Governor (Special Duties) and a resident of Ikibiri Community, commended His Excellency Sen. Douye Diri for his commendable commitment to rural infrastructural development, which has seen roads springing up in some of the most remote areas of Southern Ijaw and Ekeremor.

He expressed optimism that the Miracle Governor will address their needs as well. He said, “Ikibiri community is part of the Yenagoa Capital Development Area, which is in dire need of road connection to its neighboring communities by land. That’s why, during our 2023 governorship campaigns to this place, our slogan was a vote for ‘Ikibiri By Bus,’ and thankfully we won to the glory of God.”

“I know that my Governor is aware of this matter, and I believe that the Ikibiri-Airport road is on his radar because it would promote commerce and open the community to unfathomable economic prosperity, especially with the Bayelsa International Airport and the Niger Delta University, Amassoma in our vicinity. This road is key to the hearts of the people, and we pray that it will come to fruition during this administration, so that our campaigns for the next Governor will be by bus and not by boat.”

It is reported that the absence of roads and other social amenities has led to medical and other government personnel posted to this community hardly staying to carry out their duties optimally.

The community has also experienced several fatalities from engine boat and hand-pulled ferry-canoe accidents while young people were ferrying travelers across the river to board motorcycles on a bush path en route to Swali – Yenagoa as a means of survival.

As we continue to savor the blessings of continuity and good works through the 6th year of the Prosperity Government, the Ikibiri Community is hoping and counting on His Excellency Sen. Douye Diri, Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, to hear their voices and take action to resolve the road challenges they face.
