Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! On March 18, 2025, the political landscape of Rivers State was irrevocably altered with the shocking announcement of a State of Emergency declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The decision led to the suspension of not only the democratically elected Governor but also his Deputy and the entire House of Assembly. This unprecedented move has prompted widespread condemnation across Nigeria and raised serious questions about the future of democratic governance in the region.

In response to this alarming development, the Board of Trustees and expanded National Executive Committee of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) convened an emergency meeting. The meeting sought to review the implications of the President’s actions and chart a collective path forward for the people of Rivers State and the South-South region.
Upon careful deliberation, PANDEF highlighted several critical points:
- The Context of the Declaration: Shockingly, the State of Emergency occurred just a week after the President had met with a high-level South-South delegation. This delegation, which included traditional rulers, former Governors, and notable political figures, had been commended for their peace efforts in the region. The abrupt reversal in the President’s stance raises grave concerns about his commitment to the dialogue initiated with these respected leaders.
- Contradictory Messaging: Following the delegation’s meeting, the President charged PANDEF’s Peace and Reconciliation Committee to encourage the elected officials to adhere to Supreme Court rulings. Just days later, however, he opted for an extreme measure instead of supporting the democratic process he had advocated for.
- Unjustified Actions: The recent unrest, including the blow-up of a pipeline, is regrettable but not unprecedented in Nigeria. It compels us to question the rationale behind militarizing Rivers State and removing its elected leaders when similar crises in other states have not led to such drastic interventions.
- The Role of National Institutions: PANDEF expressed its disappointment with the National Assembly’s silence and inaction. The forum calls on the leadership of both the Senate and the House of Representatives to stand firm and reject this glaring attack on democracy.
- Commitment to Peace and Stability: As a body that represents the interests of the South-South citizens, PANDEF reaffirmed its dedication to pursuing peace and stability in the region. The forum aims to foster constructive dialogue with the Federal Government to address the situation in Rivers State.

In light of these points, PANDEF concludes with a resolute commitment to monitor developments closely and pursue any constitutional remedies available. This situation is not merely about the politics of Rivers State; it signifies a critical moment for Nigerian democracy as a whole.
Efforts to engage in constructive dialogue and reconciliation must continue, demonstrating to the people of the South-South that their voices matter and that democracy must prevail. As we reflect on the events of March 18 and their repercussions, it is imperative that we recognize the potential consequences of undermining democratic institutions in our beloved country.
Let us rally for democracy, accountability, and peace in Rivers State and beyond.
