Data obtained from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority reveals a 13% drop in domestic air travel between January and July 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

Furthermore, figures from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria indicate a 23% decline in passenger traffic at the domestic wing of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, the country’s busiest airport.

Industry insiders attribute this decrease to rising airfares, poor living standards, a lack of disposable income, and security concerns. The decline also reflects a decrease in tourism activity due to the fluctuating exchange rate between the Naira and the dollar and the high cost of fuel, leading to expensive airfares.

The situation has prompted discussions on the need for strategic adjustments, legislation, and licensing to support the industry during these challenging economic times.
