“As governors, both of us have collaborated quietly to resolve the Soku oil well dispute that predated our administrations. Same way, we will work together as brother states to resolve any other issue that might arise. Rivers and Bayelsa cannot afford to be at loggerheads, especially as we are in the same party. So, we will continue to collaborate.
With recent developments suggesting progress in reconciliation efforts, there is growing anticipation that Governor Fubara may soon return to office as part of a broader political settlement aimed at restoring stability in Rivers State.
Many await Tinubu’s decision, which could reshape Rivers politics and restore stability. Fubara’s demonstrated willingness for peace, coupled with public sentiment, makes his return likely — though under terms that might limit his political autonomy going forward. All eyes remain fixed on May 29 for the final outcome.
The timing of the meeting is particularly crucial. On March 18, 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing escalating political tensions that threatened governance and public order. Against this backdrop, the renewed dialogue between Fubara and Wike, under the guidance of respected political elders, represents a possible path forward in stabilizing the region’s leadership.
We hold the expectation that members of the newly inaugurated Adhoc Committee will seize the opportunity to etch their names in gold by providing effective oversight of the Administrator’s actions, and where appropriate, reversing some of the unlawful measures he has undertaken since assuming office. A case in point is the arbitrary dissolution of duly constituted democratic institutions, followed by rather whimsical and capricious reconstitution of same.

As South-South Governors, we support Mr. President’s Tax Reform Bill. However, we also urged him to extend the proposed VAT sharing percentages to other areas of derivation, such as oil and gas.
