The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, His Excellency Chief Timipre Marlin Sylva, has chosen ex-militant Great Joshua MacIver as his running mate for the upcoming November 11, 2023 Governorship elections in Bayelsa State, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

MacIver, who hails from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area and is the leader of the Izon Tukpa Movement, came second in the April 2023 governorship primaries.

Sources have revealed that Sylva’s decision to choose MacIver as his running mate is aimed at compensating the people of Southern Ijaw for the loss of the governorship seat won by David Lyon in November 2019, before his removal by the Supreme Court in February 2020. The choice of MacIver, who is a former militant, has raised some eyebrows, but Sylva has defended his decision, stating that MacIver has turned a new leaf and is now a responsible citizen who is committed to the development of Bayelsa State. The APC candidate has also stated that his choice of running mate is based on merit and the need to ensure that all parts of Bayelsa State are represented in his administration.
The upcoming governorship elections in Bayelsa State are expected to be keenly contested between the APC and the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
