These men of courage, in 1990, raised the issue of self-determination in Nigeria through Gideon Orkar. However, the Babangida regime killed all of them.
Thirty-five years ago, they recognized what the people of the Niger Delta, particularly the Ijaws, are facing today and raised their voices to challenge the evil regime.
In the photo above are the late Army Captain Nimibibowei Harley Empere (a Ph.D. holder) and Tarakiri Ijaw, born in Agbere, sitting in the middle. After a failed coup aimed at overthrowing the then-feared military head of state, General Ibrahim Babangida, Empere had already escaped to safety. However, upon hearing that his Ijaw brother, the late Army Captain Perebo Abeela Dakolo, had been captured, Empere returned and submitted himself for execution.
Dakolo reportedly questioned him, why he came back? It was said that he told Dakolo, that “you are my Ijaw brother, we are soldiers, I can’t watch you die alone in the hands of other tribes, if I cannot save you, let me share in your pain and die with you”. They were later executed.
