The power plant, initially scheduled for inauguration in December 2025, also missed a subsequent deadline set for February 2026.
The Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku Obiyai, told newsmen on Tuesday that following the previous missed deadlines, the state government is now cautious about announcing a specific inauguration date.
She noted that the project is in its final stages, as the eight generating units have been fully installed, and plans are underway to invite the President for the commissioning.
“The process of inviting the President has been activated, and the gas-fired turbine is almost ready. I am glad that you visited the project site and could assess the level of work being done.
“The people of Bayelsa are eager to see the turbine come on stream, and by the grace of God, we have almost reached the point of inauguration,” she said.
Earlier at the project site, the Site Manager, Engr. Steve Bubagha, told journalists that work is nearing completion.
He explained that all eight generating components of the power plant have been installed, while the project team is currently reviewing and cross-checking the work done so far.
“What we are doing now is checking all that we have done to ensure everything is in place before the test run. I don’t want to use the word ‘commissioning,’ but we are revisiting all aspects of the work to ensure accuracy and completeness.
“The inauguration of the project is a very sensitive issue, so we are being extremely careful with our statements. You have been here before, you have seen the progress, and you should be able to deduce that significant milestones have been achieved. However, by the grace of God, we are almost there.”
He added, “We have concluded major network components.”
It was also gathered that the eight units of the gas-powered plant were manufactured by General Electric, a United States-based firm.
