As Ambassador Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali, PhD OON, addressed the assembly, heartfelt words flowed like a river honoring not just the man who has dedicated his life to academia and culture but the profound impact he has made in the lives of so many individuals. In a world that sometimes forgets to pause and recognize the stewards of knowledge and culture, this event served as a shining reminder of the importance of heritage and appreciation.
“Happy 92nd birthday,” the Ambassador began, embodying the sentiments shared by all present. This was not merely a celebration of age but a tribute to an extraordinary father, mentor, and inspirator whose life has been a beacon of knowledge and creativity. From his foundational role at the Department of History at the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Alagoa has shaped generations of historians with his passion, accuracy, and unwavering dedication.
Reflecting on his career, Dr. Igali reminisced about long hours spent under Professor Alagoa’s tutelage, where the lessons learned transcended textbooks and entered the realm of life lessons—lessons underscored by historical integrity and an understanding of the cultural nuances of the Ijaw identity and reality. “Your timeless teachings reminded us to take the historical vocation seriously, securely anchoring ourselves in our past.”
But Professor Alagoa’s contributions are not limited to academia alone. His love for the arts and culture has cultivated a sense of creativity and appreciation that reaches far beyond the classroom. As a historian, he not only recorded the past but also celebrated the beauty of life through art, offering a holistic view of the world and inviting those around him to engage with it.
To commemorate this special day, Ambassador Igali unveiled an art exhibition curated by Professor Pamela Cyril-Egware, showcasing cherished pieces that speak to Professor Alagoa’s artistic taste and the aesthetic values he has instilled in his followers. This exhibition serves as a tangible representation of his love for art and the deeper cultural narratives it weaves.

As the evening unfolded, gratitude filled the air. The stories shared, the laughter echoed, and the deep respect for Professor Alagoa’s work and character shone brightly—an exquisite reflection of a life well-lived and a legacy that will endure for generations to come.
In closing, the Ambassador articulated a collective wish: “As we sing praises today, may we also look forward to many more years filled with vitality, joy, and continued contributions to the world of history, arts, and culture!”
“Nua nua opudau, Alabo Kala Joe!”—a heartfelt salute to a luminary whose life story continues to inspire, educate, and enrich not only the Ijaw community but the broader tapestry of Nigerian heritage.
On this 92nd birthday, we engage in a celebration not just of an individual but of the rich legacy of knowledge and culture that he has nurtured so lovingly. Happy birthday, Professor Alagoa! Here’s to many more years of celebrating history, arts, and culture!
