It was a moment of deep reflection at the 2026 Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yenagoa Branch, themed “Securing the Future,” held at the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) Conference Hall in Yenagoa.

The summit featured thought-provoking discussions on the deterioration of societal values and the gradual decline in national consciousness regarding the preservation and protection of Nigeria’s future.

Participants examined the choices made over the years as a nation and emphasized the urgent need to restore the values that once defined Nigerian society.

The event attracted distinguished personalities, including renowned Kenyan lawyer and activist, , who delivered the keynote address.

Also in attendance were former Nigerian President and the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), , both of whom enriched the conversations with valuable insights and perspectives.

A major focus of the summit was National Asset Protection as a shared responsibility of all Nigerians. Stakeholders, including security agencies, regulatory bodies, and development institutions, emphasized the need for collective action in safeguarding national assets and building a more secure future for generations to come.

As one of the panelists, I observed that any meaningful discussion on securing the future must take cognizance of the past and critically examine the mistakes and missed opportunities that have shaped our present realities.

Understanding these challenges, I noted, is essential to charting a more sustainable path forward.

In my contribution, I emphasized the importance of investing in quality education and promoting value reorientation among young people across the country. Education remains one of the most effective tools for shaping character, fostering responsible citizenship, and preparing future leaders.

I further noted that the growing influence of foreign cultures and values has contributed to the erosion of some cherished societal norms. Consequently, there is a need for deliberate investment in quality education, moral instruction, and value-based learning to rebuild the nation’s social fabric and place Nigeria on the path of sustainable growth and development.

The summit served as a timely reminder that securing the future is a collective responsibility that requires visionary leadership, strong institutions, quality education, and a renewed commitment to the values that unite Nigerians as one people.
