YENAGOA — Ahead of the 2027 general elections, political consultations have continued to gather momentum in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, with aspirants reaching out to key stakeholders and political leaders ahead of the forthcoming electoral contests.

One of those intensifying consultations is Samuel Pereyei Okiakpe, a politician from Gbaraun, Constituency 4, Ward 15, who visited Hon. Engr. Rodney Ebikebina Ambaiowei, Member representing Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, in Yenagoa.
Speaking during a political chat with EMTV News after the meeting, Okiakpe disclosed that his visit was part of his ongoing consultations with stakeholders regarding his aspiration to become Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
“My name is Samuel Pereyei Okiakpe. I’m from Gbaraun, Constituency 4, Ward 15. What brought me here is to consult with the Honourable Member representing Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency,” he said.
Okiakpe explained that although he had been consulting widely, he had not previously been able to meet Ambaiowei personally, prompting the visit.
He said the response from the people he had so far consulted had been encouraging.
“The consultation has been positive. The people I’ve been meeting, the response has been positive,” he stated.
The chairmanship aspirant described himself as a longstanding participant in politics and public service, saying his decision to seek the chairmanship at this time was borne out of his desire to continue serving the people at the local government level.
“I’ve been an old politician, not today, and all along I have been serving. But this time around, I want to aspire for the chairmanship of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area. That’s why I came to consult him.”
On the outcome of his meeting with Ambaiowei, Okiakpe acknowledged that the federal lawmaker stopped short of declaring outright support for his aspiration, noting that other aspirants had also approached him for consultations.
According to him, Ambaiowei explained that he could not wholeheartedly commit his support to any particular aspirant at this stage, as several contenders had also met with him.
Okiakpe, however, interpreted the position as a demonstration of political leadership and restraint, agreeing that the decision ultimately rests with the political leadership.
“That’s leadership,” he said.
The consultation comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with prospective candidates across Southern Ijaw engaging political leaders, stakeholders, community influencers and constituents as they position themselves for various elective positions.
