Centre for Disaster Risk Management to induct Otuoke as RIMSON Fellow at 2026 IDDRR celebration
The Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies (CRDMDs), University of Port Harcourt, has invited Dr Otuoke Augustine Nicholas to serve as Guest of Honour at the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) and Fellowship Induction ceremony scheduled for October 13, 2026.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The invitation, contained in a letter dated August 18, 2026, and signed by the Centre’s Director, Prof. Mbee Daniel Mbee, described Dr Otuoke as a key stakeholder in disaster risk reduction and management, citing his professional, administrative, philanthropic and community leadership roles.
According to the Centre, the 2026 IDDRR programme is designed to strengthen public awareness, capacity building, advocacy and collaboration on disaster risk management.
The letter stated that the University considers Dr Otuoke’s organisation “a valued partner in promoting knowledge sharing, environmental sustainability, and disaster risk reduction,” while noting that his professional background makes him “a critical stakeholder in the disaster management ecosystem.”
Nominated for Award and Hall of Fame
Beyond the invitation as Guest of Honour, the Centre said it has nominated Dr Otuoke for an Award of Excellence as a Distinguished Disaster Management Personality from the University.
The proposed recognition will also see his name listed in the Centre’s Hall of Fame, alongside his proposed induction as a Fellow of the Risk Managers Society of Nigeria (RIMSON).
The Centre said the honours are in recognition of his “contributions to a sustainable environment in Nigeria.”
Public Awareness Campaign, Lectures and Stakeholder Engagement
The 2026 IDDRR commemoration will feature a series of activities, including a public awareness campaign on disaster risk reduction and mitigation strategies, public lectures, community enlightenment programmes and stakeholder engagement sessions.
The Centre said the activities are intended to promote greater disaster awareness and preparedness among citizens and stakeholders.
The letter further explained that the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction originated in 1989 following a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, with the objective of promoting global risk awareness and a culture of disaster reduction.
Event to Attract Government, Industry, Academia and Traditional Leaders
The University said the event is expected to attract distinguished personalities from government institutions, corporate organisations, the armed forces, traditional institutions, academia, youth organisations, non-governmental organisations, captains of industry and members of the public.
The Centre also appealed to Dr Otuoke for sponsorship, outlining six sponsorship categories ranging from Pearl at ₦2.5 million to Platinum at ₦20 million. The packages include varying levels of event branding, goodwill messages and sponsorship plaques.

The Centre expressed appreciation to Dr Otuoke for considering its invitation and sponsorship request, concluding the correspondence with assurances of the Director’s “highest regard.”
