In a statement released earlier today, Biden stated that it was “in the best interest of my party and the country” for him to step aside but assured the public that he would remain in office for the final six months of his term.
Citing the need for party unity and a strong Democratic contender to face off against Donald Trump, Biden wholeheartedly endorsed his vice-president, Kamala Harris, to become the new Democratic nominee. Harris wasted no time in accepting the endorsement and pledged to “earn and win” the nomination, vowing to do “everything in my power to unite our nation and defeat Donald Trump.”
Biden’s decision to back Harris has received widespread support within the party. Former President Bill Clinton and Hilary Clinton, who famously ran against Trump in 2016, also voiced their support for Harris. They emphasized the importance of rallying behind a strong candidate, asserting that Democrats must “fight with everything we’ve got to elect her.”
While some may have expected an endorsement from former President Barack Obama, he stopped short of endorsing any specific candidate. Obama did, however, express confidence in the Democratic Party’s ability to name an “outstanding nominee.” This statement indicates that the party may still be in the process of selecting a candidate, with Harris being a frontrunner due to Biden’s endorsement.
With Americans heading to the polls in just four months on November 5th, the Democratic Party faces a critical decision in choosing a candidate capable of challenging Donald Trump.
