The Bayelsa State Governorship election, scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for November 11, 2023, is set to be a historic event in the state’s political history. In our democratic system, candidates are allowed to run for the office of Governor twice, or for a maximum of 8 years in office. The current Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Sen. Douye Diri is seeking re-election for a second term to continue his work of completing abandoned projects and initiating new ones.

His main opponent in the upcoming election is Chief Timipre Marlin Sylva, a former Governor and Minister of Petroleum (State), who had previously stated that he would not run for Governor again.
However, he is now running as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for his final term. These two candidates, Sen. Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Chief Timipre Sylva of the APC, are considered the major contenders for the Bayelsa 2023 Gubernatorial elections, which Erevision MediaTV has dubbed the “Clash of the Titans”.
It is expected to be a closely contested election, with both candidates presenting their visions for the development of Bayelsa State.
