The Silence of Sovereignty: A Nation Under Siege

Nigeria stands at a harrowing crossroads where the sanctity of human life has been reduced to a recurring press release. For too long, the Nigerian state has substituted genuine governance with a hollow ritual of “commiseration.” We must ask: has the moral compass of this nation been permanently broken by the unaddressed ghosts of the 1960s and 70s, or have our leaders simply lost their humanity?

The current administration has inherited and perfected a chilling “APC doctrine” of indifference. Under the previous leadership of Muhammadu Buhari, we saw the normalization of massacres, met only with scripted sympathies. Today, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues this legacy of passionless governance, presiding over a system that watches its citizens fall while offering nothing but empty words and “thoughts and prayers.”

When a government becomes a spectator to the slaughter of its own people, it forfeits its primary claim to legitimacy. The Nigerian state appears not just incapacitated, but unwilling to break the cycle of violence. To the poor and defenseless citizens who bear the brunt of this insecurity: your grief is seen, and your fear is justified.

If the state continues to fail in its fundamental duty to protect, it forces the hand of the people to seek their own survival. A government that cannot secure its borders or its streets cannot expect a population to wait indefinitely for a protection that never arrives. The era of “moving on” over the graves of the innocent must end.
