According to figures from the country’s Debt Management Office (DMO) and the latest ranking by the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICiR), Bayelsa reduced its debt by 22.4 per cent between 2024 and 2025—the highest reduction recorded by any subnational government in Nigeria.

The state’s total debt profile dropped from ₦168.86 billion in 2024 to ₦130.98 billion in 2025.

While prioritising a reduction in the state’s debt burden—much of which was inherited from previous administrations—the Senator Douye Diri-led government has maintained momentum in executing major legacy projects that continue to shape Bayelsa’s development trajectory.
