Digital Birth Registration Begins in Bayelsa State with Support from UNICEF

The National Population Commission in collaboration with National Orientation Agency and Bayelsa State Primary Health Care Development Agency with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has commenced training of Volunteers for the Digital Birth Registration of children aged 0-5 years.

While declaring the training open, the Hon. Federal Commissioner representing Bayelsa State in the National Population Commission Mrs.Gloria Izonfuo, mni, said the training is aimed at mop-up unregistered births of children in all parts of the State.

The Hon. Federal Commissioner who was ably represented by the State Director Mrs. Evelyn Micah said that registration of births and deaths is one of the mandates of the National Population Commission.

Mrs. Micah emphasized that registration of birth is a continuous exercise that is being carried out by the Commission in Bayelsa State.

She emphasized that registration of birth covers children from the ages of 0-17, stressing that the mop-up exercise would focus on the registration children from age 0-5 years and birth certificates issued to them free of charge.

The State Director explained that of births does not cover everybody as persons above 17 years are expected to obtain a letter of attestation from the NPC office in Yenagoa.

Volunteers for the Digital Birth Registration comprising health workers, NYSC and National Orientation Agency and recruited from their locality of residence were successfully selected through their online applications.

Field work for the birth registration mop-up exercise which is expected to be conducted with the use of a Android smart phone, is expected to last 15 days.
