ECOWAS Military Chiefs Set for Meeting in Ghana Amidst Niger Unrest

According to a Ghanaian army spokesperson, the military chiefs of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will convene in Accra, Ghana on Thursday and Friday amidst concerns over a possible military intervention in Niger.

In response to Niger’s coup, some ECOWAS member states had considered military action before ultimately emphasizing the need for peaceful resolution.

Last week, ECOWAS defense ministers and military officials met to draft deployment plans after issuing an ultimatum to the coup leaders.

Five ECOWAS members have expressed a willingness to provide troops in the event of an intervention, while suspended member states Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Mali have announced their support for the Niger junta.
