The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has formally inaugurated a high-powered Reconciliation Committee to address the protracted political crisis in Rivers State, warning that continued escalation could undermine public confidence and deepen instability in a state vital to Nigeria’s political and economic life.

Speaking at the inauguration on January 12, 2026, the Chairman of the Committee, Chief Godwin Kanu Agabi, described the assignment as a solemn responsibility undertaken in service to the people of Rivers State and the nation at large. He expressed gratitude to PANDEF’s Board of Trustees, led by Ambassador Godknows Igali, and paid glowing tribute to King Alfred Papapraye Diete-Spiff, whom he described as a historic symbol of sacrifice and unity in the South-South.
Agabi noted that the Rivers crisis had lingered for too long, stressing that any further deterioration would cast doubt on the commitment of all parties to democratic governance and the collective interest of the people. He cautioned against destructive political brinkmanship, likening the situation to a parable in which needless conflict leaves all sides vulnerable to loss.
The Committee emphasized that reconciliation remains achievable, arguing that the principal actors share a common political history and once worked together to attain their current positions. According to Agabi, humility, apology, and forgiveness are essential ingredients for lasting peace, adding that true leadership is demonstrated through restraint and reconciliation rather than prolonged confrontation.
In a significant appeal, the Committee called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, to take the lead in resolving the impasse. Agabi praised Wike’s record as former governor and his current national role, describing him as courageous and patriotic, while also affirming his personal and professional bond with Governor Fubara, whom he urged to honor the spirit of reconciliation.
The Committee further expressed confidence in the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the presidential system entrusts the Head of State with the responsibility to discern truth amid competing voices and to act in the national interest when tensions threaten stability.
Addressing the Rivers State House of Assembly, the Committee acknowledged the lawmakers’ patriotic intentions but appealed for a change of heart, urging them to demonstrate maturity and public spirit through forgiveness and dialogue.
Agabi concluded by stressing that the Committee is not constituted to apportion blame or sit in judgment, but to facilitate reconciliation. He urged all parties to make the necessary sacrifices for peace, insisting that Rivers State—and Nigeria—cannot afford the cost of prolonged political discord.
The PANDEF initiative marks a renewed regional effort to restore calm and unity in Rivers State, with stakeholders hopeful that sustained dialogue and goodwill will yield an amicable resolution.
