The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the death of its Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, popularly known as Talban Wushishi, who died in Abuja on Friday, August 28, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 66.

The Commission, in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Adelayo Serifat Olurode, described the death as a profound loss to the Commission and the nation.
Dr. Yusuf was sworn in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the 8th substantive Chairman of the NPC on December 3, 2025, and had begun implementing a Seven-Point Agenda focused on repositioning the Commission and strengthening its contribution to national development.
According to the NPC, his leadership was marked by a commitment to improving the generation of reliable demographic data needed for effective national planning.
The Commission said Dr. Yusuf brought extensive experience in public service to the position, having served in various capacities spanning education, governance, grassroots politics and community development.
Among his previous positions were Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area of Niger State, Member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly, Board Member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor of Niger State.
Until his appointment as NPC Chairman, he served as National President of the Niger State College of Education Alumni Association, Minna, and Co-Chairman of the Senator Abubakar Sani Bello Skill Acquisition and Development Committee.
Describing the deceased as “a dedicated patriot, an astute administrator, and a compassionate leader,” the NPC said his commitment to national development and the production of credible demographic data remained unwavering.
The Commission extended its condolences to President Tinubu, the Federal Government, the government and people of Niger State, and members of the Yusuf family.
The NPC prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive Dr. Yusuf’s shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and give his family, friends and associates the strength to bear what it described as an “irreparable loss.”
Dr. Aminu Yusuf was born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State. His death comes less than nine months after he assumed leadership of the National Population Commission.
