As part of its peace-building initiative, PANDEF announced the constitution of a high-level reconciliation committee to intervene in the crisis. The committee is chaired by Kanu Agabi, SAN, CON, a former Attorney-General of the Federation, with Senator Obende Domingo, former Senator for Edo North, serving as Vice Chairman. Other members include Rt. Hon. (Chief) Essien Nduese, CON; Dr. Timiebi Koripamo-Agari, OON; Chief Mike Ejiofor (rtd); Mrs. Nella Rabana-Andem, SAN; while Prince Godwin Okotie, Deputy National Secretary of PANDEF, will serve as Secretary.
Across the region—from Akwa Ibom to Bayelsa, and through Cross River, Delta, and Edo States—there has been relative peace and improved security. According to him, even the unfortunate period of a state of emergency in Rivers State has, thankfully, become a thing of the past, with the state now recording unprecedented progress.
As we move forward, let our faith in God Almighty, whose benevolence has placed our region as a leading contributor to the national economy for decades, remain resolute and strengthened. Let us continue to draw guidance from the Scriptures, as stated in Psalms 60:12: “With God we shall gain the victory, and He will trample down our enemies.”
The PANDEF chairman expressed hope that the coming year would usher in a period of healing, unity, and progress across the Niger Delta. He emphasized the need for collective resolve and togetherness in addressing common challenges and advancing the development of the region.
PANDEF again take this opportunity to express the hope that, as Mr. President will continue to follow through with these reforms in the sector, more sons and daughters of the Niger Delta from where the country has the highest number of experienced professionals in the sector, would be brought into other top positions within the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation {NNPC} and the industry at large. Furthermore, we look forward to sustained efforts of the Federal Government in putting in place a robust programme for the environmental remediation of the Niger Delta. The Federal Government must go beyond Ogoni Clean-up to ensure that there is budgetary provision on annual basis to clean up the damaged environments of the Niger Delta in a sustained manner.
