Tinubu Considers Reinstating Fubara Amid Rising Tensions with Wike

Since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, calm has returned to the region. However, the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Prof. Ngozi Ordu, and the entire legislative arm has destabilized the state’s governance and economy according to Vanguard Newspapers.

Stripped of power for nearly two months, Fubara has made moves to reconcile with his former mentor, Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. On April 18, Fubara visited Wike in Abuja, accompanied by Yoruba political leaders, seeking forgiveness.

Wike, who felt betrayed by Rivers elders during the 2023 elections, blamed them for stoking the crisis. These elders, having clashed with Wike over PDP’s presidential primaries and Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy, later rallied behind Fubara against Wike. Their opposition allegedly hindered the implementation of Tinubu’s earlier peace agreement.

Realizing Wike’s political strength and Tinubu’s support, Fubara has opted for direct peace talks. After a private meeting with Tinubu in Germany, he again approached Wike for reconciliation. Analysts and regional leaders believe Tinubu is under significant pressure to reinstate Fubara by May 29, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, which would symbolize democratic restoration.

Key voices, including the Ijaw National Congress and Ijaw Republican Assembly, urge Tinubu to use the occasion to prove his democratic credentials. Speculations suggest that Fubara’s reinstatement will come with power-sharing agreements favoring Wike’s bloc in commissioner appointments and local government elections.

Many await Tinubu’s decision, which could reshape Rivers politics and restore stability. Fubara’s demonstrated willingness for peace, coupled with public sentiment, makes his return likely — though under terms that might limit his political autonomy going forward. All eyes remain fixed on May 29 for the final outcome.
